THE WORD
Why It Was Given
Psalm 19
February 5, 2012
- God’s Word RESTORES us.
(Ps 19:7a) The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
(Deut 32:46-47) he said to them, “Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. 47For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”
- God’s Word makes us WISE.
(Ps 19:7b) …the testimony of the Lord is sure,making wise the simple;
(James 1:5-6) If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
- God’s Word brings us JOY.
(Ps 19:8a) the precepts of the Lord are right,rejoicing the heart;
(Lk 24:27, 31-32) And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself…And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
God’s Word ushers in LIGHT.
(Ps 19:8b) the commandment of the Lord is pure,enlightening the eyes;
- God’s Word establishes PEACE.
(Ps 19:9a) the fear of the Lord is clean,enduring forever;
(Deut 4:10) how on the day that you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.
- God’s Word promises final JUDGEMENT.
(Ps 19:9b) … the rules of the Lord are true,and righteous altogether.
(Matt 25:31-34) “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
- What is our RESPONSE to such a great Word?
(Ps 19:10-11) More to be desired are they than gold,even much fine gold;sweeter also than honeyand drippings of the honeycomb.11Moreover, by them is your servant warned;in keeping them there is great reward.
